 FISHING REPORT

August 21, 2011

Lower Lake Oahe is finally hot!  The lake level is dropping and conditions change constantly.  The fish are scattered everywhere -- 10 to 25 feet.  Pulling spinners (yellow and orange) is working well for me, but I have heard reports that pulling plugs is working too.

We are throwing back fish over 20 inches because we have our limit, and there are plenty of smaller walleye.  We are catching a lot of smaller fish, but the eatin' is still good!

Today was hot but the bass were abundant.  Those little guys sure put up a good fight!

Took out  Pierre locals, Dustin and his dad, who had never had the opportunity to try Salmon fishing.  We caught a nice 8 lb Chinook on a purple spoon in 95 feet of water.  they had a blast reeling it in!

This fishing has been good the last few weeks.  The walleye are moving around a lot -- one day they will be in 8 ft of water and the next they will be in 15 ft of water.  We are still fishing north of Pierre, up around Bush's Landing and the Cheyenne.

We have seen a lot of small fish (14-15 inches) and throw them back so in a few years there will be some great hogs on Lake Oahe!  The last few days, the fishing has been tough but we brought home some nice fish, we have limited out in our over 20.

We got some great publicity earlier this week --

check it out -- Dakota Prairie Outdoors!

Dr. Linda and family were back for another wild adventure on Lake Oahe.  It was a little more windy than needed for the famous walleye chop but we caught some nice walleye out of Bush's Landing and Little Bend.

A picture is worth a thousand words --

these walleye say it all!

The Mighty Mo is angry and taking it out on Pierre, but that hasn't stopped the fishing.

The waters are still good up on Lake Oahe.  We have been catching our limit up in the Cheyenne.

We have taken some long boat rides to get out of the wind and find the fish, but the fish are biting.

There have been nice Walleye, Bass, and a lot of small Northern Pike.

Wow!  It has been a busy month.  We have been catching some wonderful fish throughout the river.

I took out some boys from Kansas and had a great time!

There is nothing more exciting than having two smallies hooked at the same time.  The walleye and the small mouth bass are still biting at West Bend.  They had a great trip catching fish and enjoying the great weather.

These pictures say it all, check out the walleye!

To finish off a full weekend of bass and walleye fishing, a few hours on Lake Oahe was all Barb needed to reel in this beautiful 10-lb chinook salmon.

Hope to see you on the lake soon!

We had a group of wonderful people fishing Memorial weekend!  The walleye and small mouth bass were biting fast and furious at West Bend.

Because of the  slot limit on Lake Sharpe, we had to throw back a lot of 17 to 17 1/2-inch small mouth bass but they were still great fun to catch!

We still managed to find some nice keepers and had time to go up to Lake Oahe and troll for some salmon.

The salmon are biting much deeper than usual for this time of the year so be sure to drop the lures to where the fish finder is marking them.

We had a full weekend of fun and fishing and the boys took home a cooler full of walleye, bass and salmon!

Spring is here and the fish are biting!

This is a 21.6 pound, 38 inch Northern Pike that Jim from Iowa caught last Friday.  We were fishing in the back bay of Spring Creek using bobbers and frozen smelt.

We caught our limit of Walleye at West Bend the next day using minnows and pulling plugs.  All around, it was a great trip for Jim and his wife; they are already planning a return trip for later this summer.

The fishing will only get better as the water warms up.  Hope to see you out on the water soon!

Spring is coming (eventually) and Pierre, SD is starting to warm up.  In fact, there was a couple of boats under the bridges today, jigging for walleye in the current.

The ice is still thick on Lake Oahe and they are fishing and spearing for Northern and Walleye.  They are catching fish through the ice down at Joe's Creek on Lake Sharpe, too.

Another few weeks (or so) and ice will start going out and the Northern will be hungry.  The shallow waters in back of the bays will be the place to go.

The calls are starting to come in as people are planning their summer vacations.  Reserve your date soon, I am eager to hear from you!
